Accommodation

Accommodation in Heraklion:

It is highly recommended that you book accommodation in Heraklion rather than near FORTH (since there aren't many options).

If you are planning to enjoy a few more days, the Ammodoudara area is also an option. It is where the main "city beach" is—a long sandy beach outside Heraklion. You will need a taxi (10 min) to go from Ammoudara to FORTH and a taxi (10-15 min) or bus (20-25 min) to go to the city center.

There are many options for accommodations in Heraklion, which can be explored using  Booking.com.

Several hotels offer reduced rates for visitors to FORTH. These are:

Restaurants

There are many good restaurants in Heraklion. Some restaurants with good food and that are all within ~10 min walking distance from the city center:

• Petousis - Excellent traditional Cretan cuisine
• Kouzineri - an exceptional high-quality steak house
• Peskesi - more elaborate/original Cretan dishes
• Plani - a small restaurant with a yard, with traditional Greek/Cretan cuisine 
• Koukouvagia - more elaborate Greek/Cretan selections
• Ippokampos - excellent seafood selection just by the old port
• Paralia - good seafood selection just by the old port
• Mare Riviera coffee bar & food - breakfast/lunch/dinner coffee/drinks by the sea

• XALABRO - outdoor open bar at the center of Heraklion
• FIX - in a nice and quiet small square
• NTORE - top roof
• MOSAIKO - casual

Museums

For those who stay an extra day or so, the following are strongly recommended

• Heraklion Archaeological Museum - unique in the world Minoan exhibits
• Minoan Palace of Knossos - just 6 km from the city center - 20min by bus (O2)
• Historical Museum of Crete - by the sea front, with emphasis on the Byzantine and more modern times.
